Child Abuse

This course is aimed at helping participants to recognise what constitutes physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect of children and how to deal with possible disclosure. Participants are guided through the likely legal and health authority procedures in dealing with suspected abuse. The emphasis throughout is on dispelling some of the myths surrounding the area, and on getting practical help for all those involved.

Aim: To achieve a practical awareness of child abuse issues

On completion participants will be able to:

  • Define physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect
  • Outline current facts and figures
  • Expose some myths surrounding child abuse
  • Identify indicators of possible abuse
  • List suggestions on dealing with disclosure of abuse
  • Outline steps to take if you suspect abuse
  • Synopsise Garda and Health Board procedure
  • Refer to relevant advisory, support and enforcement agencies
  • Realise how important it is for participants to seek support for themselves after receiving a disclosure.

Coming Up

A Public Information Presentation entitled ‘Making a Will won’t kill you’ is to take place in Beara, County Cork at Eyeries National School at 7.30pm on Tuesday 23 February 2016. Hosted by Eyeries NS Parents’ Association and delivered by Anne O’Carroll of Cascade Training Consultancy, this jargon-free presentation gives practical tips on how to make a will, what happens if you don’t and how best to provide for your loved ones, avail of tax breaks and ensure peace of mind. This event is a fund-raiser for the school and is open to all, but parents of young children or other dependents are particularly encouraged to attend. There will be a Question & Answer session afterwards and handouts will be provided.
